Raul Barbieri & Anna Giuffrida - Paper Stacking Chair

For those of us in the hotel business, we know that providing for large conventions and shows can be a big logistical headache to provide for. With problems ranging from finding enough personal, organising the convention hall, providing for enough seats or everyone, and in the case of higher end hotels, making sure that the seats are reasonably good looking to accomodate those of expensive tastes which will be seating there soon after.

Most stacking contract hotel chairs are fairly standard, injection molded plastic with matt varnished legs. The Paper stacking chair by Raul Barbieri and Anna Giuffrida seems to be the notable exception. The idea was inspired, says Barbieri, by “the Heaven and Hell” origami game I used to play with when I was a child.”

Composed of two identical bent plywood sections, the chair is a lesson in beauty in symetry. Eschewing conventional joints, Raul Barbiera has attached the two identical sections using specially designed machinery and pins resulting in a clean finished look which is worthy of praise.
