Employment Conditions in the Canadian Furniture Sector

As of 2004 the furniture industry in Canada employed some 92,810 persons, more than 44% higher than 10 years ago, but almost unchanged since the beginning of this century. The improvement from its 1993 recession low of just 59,559 is truly remarkable. In other words furniture industry employment has exhibited much resiliency, especially considering the impacts the industry faced since the early 1980s from Canada?s free trade agreement. The more recent employment decline is a reflection of the industry?s slowdown due to the strengthening Canadian dollar and more Asian competition.

The rise and subsequent fall affected predominantly production workers. Indeed, salaried/commissioned employees continued to rise during the past three years.

Interestingly, the number of firms in the furniture industry declined. In 1995 there were approximately 2500 furniture establishments in Canada, but a decade later it had fallen almost one-third to about 1700. Medium sized firms shrank relatively more than either large or small firms. This suggests that you either have to be big to compete internationally, or small and flexible to carve out a niche and survive.

Chairs - History Part VI

In this next article in our series on the history of chairs we’re going to pick up with chairs made in the 19th century.

To understand the dramatic change in chair design in the 19th and 20th centuries one first has to understand the arts and crafts movement of the 19th century. This movement was almost solely responsible for the change in chair styles.

Arts and crafts, for starters, are things that are generally made by ones own hands, or as we call them today, hand made. This was a very big thing, starting in the 19th century, that things of quality had to be made by hand. In spite of the industrial revolution where items were now made mostly by machine, the chairs that truly defined the period were actually made by hand.

This movement was said to be started by William Morris and Edwin Lutyens. William Morris lived from 1834 to 1896. He was one of the principal founders of the British Arts and Crafts movement. In 1861 he founded Morris, Marshall and Faulkner. This company, which eventually became Morris and Company, recreated some of the medieval tapestry made for chairs of that period. His designs are still sold even today under the name Sanderson and Sons who bought the license from him. Read more »

Select The Right Dollhouse Furniture For Your Miniature House

A dollhouse is a source of fun both to children and adults. But whether you’re interested in dollhouses for the ability to role play, for historical accuracy, or just to admire the amount of craftsmanship that went into its construction, the dollhouse is simply incomplete unless it is furnished. It is possible to buy dollhouse furniture for any type of dollhouse, for any purpose, and for any price range.

Dollhouse furniture for children must serve several purposes. First, it must be fun. Even the most exquisitely constructed piece of dollhouse furniture is useless in a child’s dollhouse if the child does not play with it. Second, dollhouse furniture for a child’s dollhouse must be sturdy. Children are notoriously rough on their toys, and miniature furniture should be build to stand up to the extreme conditions that it may find itself in when in the hands of an active child. Most importantly, miniature furniture for kids must be safe. This is particularly of concern for parents with toddlers. As anyone who has ever raised a young child knows, anything that the toddler finds interesting is sure to make its way into his or her mouth. Therefore, miniature furniture that will be accessible by a toddler should be large enough so as to not present a choking hazard, and must also be constructed in such a way that it has no small parts that could break off and become choking hazards. Miniature furniture, like other toys, must be labeled with the target age, but parents should also double check by inspecting the toys before letting their toddler play with them.

Decorative Accessories and Accent Furniture

Decorative accessories and accent furniture are truly about your own style. These are the pieces that tie your space together in whatever direction your going for. You can decorate a whole room around a favorite accessory or use accent accessories to add depth to an existing space. Wheather you have a large space or small you should never over accessorize, this will lead to a cluttered and incongruent look and your favorite pieces will probably get lost. Use an odd number of pieces when grouping on a table or mantle. And balance out a large piece like a vase or sculpture with three or five smaller pieces opposite your large piece. If you’ve developed a taste for say…the orient, don’t ditch all your favorite heirlooms and buy everything Asian.

Many times if you pick your favorite existing pieces and add a few “theme” pieces a steady and cohesive look will emerge in your space. Try using natural materials like pressed bamboo vases or parchment paper with your own antiques or special pieces you’ve cherished for years. Another way to add a bit of the exotic is by keeping your existing accessories, and adding a few well placed accent furnitures. This could be a beautiful African hand carved coffee table or an interesting rug or throw hung on a wall instead of placed on the floor. If you’ve found and or have a very special piece don’t be afraid to showcase it. Leave off other accessories and make sure it’s in a well lit area and is size proportioned to surrounding pieces.

Should You Divorce: Or Compromise On Contemporary Furniture?

Choosing the right style of furniture to decorate your bedroom can be a lot of work, especially if you and your spouse disagree on the preferred style. For some, contemporary bedroom furniture is the perfect answer. With clean lines, sharp angles, and simplicity in style, this type of furniture speaks to a desire to follow advances into the 21st century. For others, modern bedroom furniture is an insult to the classical styles, doing away with elegant curves, detailed designs, and imposing sizes. If you are the kind of person who likes to be up to date, how can you convince your spouse that contemporary is not contemptible?

First of all, the key to such disputes is compromise. Iron beds are quite contemporary in their simplistic lines and minimalist design but often incorporate classical elements, such as intricate carvings in the wrought iron. This may be the first of many solutions available to you. Another thought is to express an interest in modern bedroom furniture that imitates antique furniture, with distress marks and chips in the wood that make it appear less ?shiny and new?. This is one element that can make contemporary bedroom furniture rather more tolerable for those who prefer a less current fashion.
