Essaime - Chromosome

chromosome.jpg

Finally , something that would do nicely as bistro cafe tables and yet is good looking enough to utilise as furniture for bars. In limited production, the Chromosome was commisioned to mark the centenary of the French Magazine, Art er Decoration. The entire structure is designed by Essaime who then brought it to manufacturer Quart De Poil in 1996.

Looking deceptively simple, the piviting legs have to be positioned correctly in order for the table to stand strong. When folded up, the base and glasstop can be displayed on the wall like a bas-relief structure of hung on a wall simply to store it out of the way due to it being light at 4kg and relatively small at 45 cm by 45 cm by 30 cm when folded.

Shay Alkalay - Stack

shay-alkalay-_coloured-stack.jpgshay-alkalay_plywood-stack.jpg

Shay Alkalay’s colored stack/ plywood stacks are a serious organiser’s dream come true. Comprising of literally a pile of floating drawer units stacked as high as you like. The skys the limit literally. As long as you’ve got a long enough ladder of course.

For bibliophiles like me this is a god send. I’m kind of bored of the book shelves around my home. Their staid lacquered teak a cherry red in color but I’m fast running out of space to build them !!

Animi Causa - Feel

feelll.jpg

A crazy mix of fun and mayhem is perhaps the best way to describe Feel by Anima Causa. Inspired by the emotional state of the body , it gives you the flexibility to change it’s form into literally whatever you like whenever you like. Curl it up in a ball, cover yourself with it, lean it against the wall, the possibilities are endless.

Think of it as Silly putty ^ 120. Silly putty comes in only 1 classic ball. But with Feel , you literally have 120 soft elastic balls to play with and rearrange as you like. I’m literally going ga-ga over the crazy things that I could do with it now, so many possibilities…so little time. :(

Have a look at this video for just a hint of the stuff you could do –>Blanket Style Fold.avi

Maciek Jurkowski - Salvadore Side Chair

salvatore.jpg

Maciek Jurkowski created this piece the Salvatore side chair when he was commissioned to equip the cathedral in Kielce (Poland) with furniture and interior fittings. As a testament to his work, today, the Archbishop is seated on a high-backed version of the Salvatore and the rest in descending order, smaller versions (shown here) for the bishops and stools for the priests. Gorgeously upholstered and covered in gold leaf, is there any wonder they took a liking to it ?

Sitting pretty and looking like the perfect fairy tale princess’s throne is the Salvatore. Maciek Jurkowski has chosen to take a different approach to the legs as compared to the fairly standard ’straight’ leg configuration. The whimsical ‘bubbles’ making up each leg give it that unique touch and playful attitude looking like it was made for a doll house.

Johnny Swing Quarter Side Chair

1a_15.jpg

The latest crazy creation from Johnny Swing (a pseudonym) is a bistro cafe chair from his Obsessive Furniture Line , more specifically the Quarter side Chair. His Obsessive Furniture Line makes use of everything objects in our daily life like glass jars, nickels and would you have it, quarters to construct his visions.

Johnny Swing’s original goal for the Quarter Chair was to come up with a simple cost-effective chair. However, according to Swing, : “This goal failed, and my more artistic obligations seemed to have resurfaced into sensual shapes held together by intricate , architectural structures.” Well fail he did, in a big way. Getting the Quarter Chair will set you back by a cool $10,000 for a limited edition handmade work of art that is limited to a set of 60 pieces.
